Wellness, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Our Wellness, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion curriculum for our residency program was implemented in the 2020-2021 academic year. Jaleen Sims, MD, MPH is the residency Associate Program Director for Wellness Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. We invite you to review our activities and vision for the respective sections below.

Residency Program

Wellness Vision Statement:

To promote a daily practice of health and wellness to help residents maintain their quality of life, dignity, professional satisfaction and humanism in patient care.

Key Learning/Implementation Objectives:

-To Minimize trainee burnout 
-Develop an environment where wellness is appreciated, supported and expected 
-Encourage trainees to participate in health and wellness activities for her/himself 
-Participate in team building exercises 
-Provide assistance with maintaining a focus on things that motivate trainees to remain passionate about patient care 

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Vision Statements:

To foster and environment where differences in views, gender, race, backgrounds and sexuality are respected and viewed as strengths to enhance the learning experience of trainees. 
To provide intentional, equitable and non-judgmental care and services to all patients, no matter their race, ethnicity, gender identity, religion and social or financial circumstances.   
 
Key Learning/Implementation Objectives:

-Build cultural competency 
-Maintain diversity in the program 
-Incorporate programming regarding infusion, equity, microaggressions, Implicit biases, etc 
-Bring awareness to systemic racism and biases and how they affect patient care 
-Encourage open, non-judgmental discussions that will allow everyone to learn

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Goal: To take steps to actively identify and address barriers to equitable and respectful treatment of patients, staff and students to permit for optimal health and professional experiences and prevent harm due to racism, bias and discrimination of all forms.  
 
The Wellness, Diversity, Equity and Includsion committee includes faculty, residents and non-clinical staff who routinely review these items:

  1. Patient Perspectives and Community Engagement
  2. Professional and Departmental Culture
  3. Outpatient Clinical Settings
  4. Inpatient Clinical Care and Patient Safety
